Story of a Song: Be Love

Aww shucks Love was just of reach…

I wish I had a dollar for everyone that told me I missed a big opportunity in not releasing Be Love on Valentine’s Day, instead, I released it on February 26th, 2021. Maybe they’re right, but that said, it felt wrong to release the song on Valentine’s day because Be Love isn’t a love song.

Be Love was written for 2020, fishing a hopeful message out of the murky, disgusting water that was this past year.

If the world was on fire,
if it was bullied and beaten,
we could conspire to be love.
We could open up our arms,
carry buckets to the burns,
if the world was on fire…
yea… we’d be love.

Unfortunately, I think that is why the song will fail to meet the goals I have for it. Why exactly?

Because it isn’t real. The world was on fire, it was bullied and beaten, and we didn’t conspire to be love.

If you’ve given all you can give just be love.
As the darkness rolls through the hills we’ll light up.
So come on now…
Just take a moment be love, be love, be love.

Not only were we not love, we were anger, thus the song simply doesn’t relate. Nobody wants to “Be Love”, they just want people that don’t agree with them to agree with them.

The song fails again in the bridge:

Not trying to argue,
not seeking a fight,
with the dark side…
But if the world was on fire, we’d be love.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone’s trying to argue, everyone’s seeking a fight.

Overall, I still enjoy the song and happy with the way it turned out, but my hopes that it will be a hit are dissipating. It’s never fun to come to that realization, but oh well, on to the next one!

Thanks for reading! I’m always happy to connect with other artists so feel free to reach out~
